Notes

  • Frozen Hashbrowns: You don’t need to thaw the hashbrowns before mixing them in. Using them straight from the freezer ensures they maintain their texture during baking, resulting in a perfectly crispy outside and soft inside.
  • Fresh Onion: For extra flavor and sweetness, you can sauté the onions in a little butter or oil before adding them to the mix. This step softens the onions and brings out a deeper flavor, making the casserole even more delicious.
  • Cheese Selection: While this recipe calls for Cheddar, you can get creative with the cheeses. Sharp cheddar adds a bold flavor, while a blend of cheeses like Monterey Jack, Gouda, or even a touch of Parmesan can elevate the dish further.
  • Butter: The melted butter not only adds a rich, buttery flavor but also helps bind the ingredients together. If you’re looking for a lighter version, you can reduce the butter slightly, though it may affect the richness.
  • Crispier Topping: If you love a crispy, browned cheese topping, try finishing the casserole under the broiler for the last couple of minutes. Keep a close eye on it to avoid burning, but this will give you a satisfyingly crunchy top layer.
  • Herb Alternatives: Feel free to experiment with different herbs. Rosemary or parsley can be great alternatives to thyme, depending on your taste. Fresh herbs will give a brighter flavor, while dried herbs will offer a deeper, more concentrated taste.
  • Adding Protein: For a more filling meal, consider adding cooked bacon, sausage, or ham into the mix. These additions turn the casserole into a hearty breakfast or brunch option, and they pair wonderfully with the cheesy base.
