These apple strudel slices are hard to resist, especially as they are so easy to make; just follow my straightforward instructions below.

Get Your Ingredients Ready

First, make sure your phyllo dough is fully thawed according to the instructions on the box. Since phyllo dough can dry out quickly, have all your ingredients prepped before you start working with it.

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to get everything ready for baking.

Slice and Prep the Apples

Grab your apples and slice them horizontally into ¼ inch thick rounds. To make things easier, use a small cap or cookie cutter to push out the cores. This will give you nice, uniform apple rings ready to be wrapped in phyllo dough.

Mix Your Spices

Work with the Phyllo Dough

Melt your butter in the microwave. On a clean work surface, lay out two sheets of phyllo dough and brush them generously with melted butter.

Cut it lengthwise into ¼ to ½ inch wide strips.

Then, layer another two sheets on top and brush them with butter as well. You should now have a stack of four buttery sheets.

Wrap the Apple Slices

Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut your phyllo stack lengthwise into ¼ to ½ inch wide strips. Carefully separate the strips—don’t worry if they stick a little.

Take an apple slice and start wrapping it with one of the phyllo strips, threading it through the center of the apple ring. Each slice will need two strips to be fully wrapped.

Use two strips to make each slice fully wrapped.

If the dough tears a bit, just press it back together and keep wrapping—it’ll all bake together nicely.

Bake to Perfection

Place your wrapped apple slices on the lined baking sheet and pop them in the oven. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until the phyllo is golden brown and crisp. Keep an eye on them so they don’t overbrown.

Finish and Enjoy

As soon as they’re out of the oven, sprinkle the remaining sugar-spice mixture over the top of each apple slice.

Let them cool slightly before digging in—though they’re best enjoyed warm when the phyllo is still crisp and the apple inside is tender.

Enjoy either on their own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. A drizzle of caramel sauce wouldn’t hurt either!

Recipe Notes and Expert Tips

You shouldn’t have a problem with this recipe, but I do know practice makes perfect, so here are some tips and tricks that I’ve learned while making them.

  • Work Quickly: Phyllo dough dries out fast, so work quickly and keep unused sheets covered with a damp cloth while you assemble.
  • Patch Up Rips: If the phyllo dough rips while wrapping, just press it back together. The layers will bake up nicely, and no one will notice!
  • Extra Crispiness: For even crispier results, try baking the apple slices on a wire rack set over the baking sheet. This allows air to circulate underneath, making the bottoms just as crispy as the tops.
  • Apple Alternatives: While Envy apples work great, you can experiment with other firm varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for a slightly different flavor.
  • Keep It Even: Slice your apples as evenly as possible to ensure they cook at the same rate. This will help you avoid undercooked or overly soft slices.
  • Spice Variation: Feel free to adjust the spice mix to your taste—adding a pinch of ground cloves or ginger can bring a whole new depth of flavor.

How to Store Leftover Cinnamon Apple Strudel Slices

If you have any leftovers (though they might disappear fast!), store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. They’ll keep in the fridge for up to 5 days, but be aware that the phyllo dough might lose some of its crispiness.

Unfortunately, freezing isn’t recommended, as it can make the dough soggy.

What to Serve With Cinnamon Apple Strudel Slices

Apple Strudel Slices are delicious on their own, but they’re even better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. A drizzle of caramel sauce wouldn’t hurt either! Pair them with a cup of hot coffee or tea for a perfect dessert or afternoon snack.
