Air Fryer Apple Cobbler

I make Air Fryer Apple Cobbler when I’m craving a cozy and comforting dessert but don’t want to heat up the whole kitchen. The buttermilk batter bakes into a golden top with soft, cake-like bites and caramelized edges, while the cinnamon apples turn tender and sweet. One scoop and you’ll see why everyone always wants more.

I make this for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and fall potlucks when I want a warm, cozy, grandma-style dessert everyone loves. It’s perfect for weekend baking, Sunday gatherings, and dinner parties because it feeds a crowd and disappears fast. The cobbler stays fresh 3 days in the fridge or 2 months in the freezer.

Here’s how to make this warm, comforting, easy dessert from start to finish.

Prep Your Pan

Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or nonstick spray. I always use a good 9×13 inch baking dish for this step; it heats evenly, never warps, and makes cleanup so much easier.

Cook the Spiced Apples

I always grab my favorite vegetable peeler for this step because it makes peeling the apples fast and effortless, giving me perfectly clean slices every time.

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, then add the peeled, sliced apples (Granny Smith works great, but use any apples you like) with the brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Stir and cook for about 5 minutes, just until the apples soften and release their juices.

The lemon brightens the filling and keeps the apples from tasting too heavy. Transfer the cooked apples to your greased baking dish and spread them into an even layer.

Make the Buttermilk Batter

In a mixing bowl, whisk the melted butter and sugar until combined. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, flour, baking powder, and salt, whisking until the batter is smooth. A few small lumps are totally fine.

Gradually add the milk, whisking as you go. The batter should be a bit runny, not thick like cake batter. I love using these spout mixing bowls for this step because they’re sturdy, lightweight, and make whisking the batter incredibly smooth and easy.

Assemble and Swirl

Pour the batter over the apples in big, uneven chunks instead of smoothing it out. This step helps create that delicious cobbler texture. Sprinkle the cinnamon or vanilla sugar on top, then use a butter knife to gently swirl it into the batter.

Let a few apples peek through so those exposed spots caramelize while the rest turn soft and tender. The swirls create crisp, sugary patches where the heat hits and softer, cake-like pockets where the batter stays thick.

Air Fry Until Golden

Place the baking dish in your air fryer basket and bake at 160°C (320°F) for 50 minutes, until the top turns golden and the apples are bubbling around the edges.

If it starts browning too fast, usually around the 25-minute mark, cover it loosely with foil. I keep Reynolds Wrap Aluminum Foil on hand for this exact purpose. The foil prevents burning while letting the cobbler finish cooking through.

Serve Warm

Let the cobbler cool for about 5 minutes before serving so it holds together. Then scoop it into bowls, serve it warm, and enjoy!

Air Fryer Apple Cobbler

Air Fryer Apple Cobbler is one of my favorite fall desserts because it tastes like the old-fashioned, homestyle treat but bakes way faster in the air fryer. The warm, cinnamon-spiced apples are topped with a golden, biscuit-like topping that gets soft and cake-like with crispy edges, creating those cozy fall flavors without heating up your oven. I make it for Thanksgiving, Christmas, fall potlucks, weekend baking, and dinner parties because it feeds a crowd and always disappears fast. It stays fresh for 3 days in the fridge or freezes well for up to 2 months.

For the Topping:

Instructions

  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
    2 tablespoons butter
  • Add apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, and spices. Stir and cook for 5 minutes, or until the apples soften.
4 apples, ¼ cup brown sugar, 1 lemon, 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder, ½ teaspoon nutmeg, ¼ teaspoon cloves
  • Transfer the apples to the greased baking pan.
  • In a bowl, whisk together melted butter and sugar.
¼ cup unsalted butter, ½ cup granulated sugar
  • Add buttermilk, vanilla, flour, baking powder, and salt, whisking until smooth (small lumps are fine). Add the milk gradually, it should be a bit runny.
½ cup buttermilk, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, ¼ teaspoon salt, ¼ cup milk
  • Pour the topping over the apples in big chunks. Sprinkle cinnamon or vanilla sugar on top and swirl gently with a butter knife – try to expose some of the apples, this will yield different textures.
2 tablespoons cinnamon or vanilla sugar
  • Place in the air fryer and bake at 160ºC (320°F) for 50 minutes, until the top is golden and apples bubble at the edges. Cover with foil halfway if browning too quickly.
  • Serve warm with ice cream.

Notes

Here are my top tips to guarantee your air-fried cobbler comes out golden, flavorful, and perfectly textured.
  • Don’t skip the lemon juice: It brightens the filling and cuts through the sweetness of the brown sugar and spices.
  • Use room temperature buttermilk: Cold buttermilk can cause the melted butter to solidify into lumps. Let it sit out for 15 minutes before mixing.
  • Expose the apples: Don’t smooth the batter completely flat. Swirl it and leave some apple pieces exposed so they caramelize and create texture contrast.
  • Check at 25 minutes: Every air fryer runs differently. If your cobbler’s browning too fast, tent it with foil and continue baking.
  • Reheat in the air fryer: The microwave works for quick reheating, but the air fryer brings back that crispy top texture, making it taste freshly baked after just 8 minutes at 160°C.
  • Flash cool for cleaner slices: If you want neat squares instead of scoops, let the cobbler cool completely before cutting, since warm cobbler tastes amazing but tends to fall apart.

How to Store Leftovers

Let the cobbler cool completely, then cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap or transfer portions to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for about 3 days.

For longer storage, freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 2 months. Reheat this dessert by covering it loosely with foil and warming it in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 15–20 minutes, until it’s heated through and the topping is crisp again.

What to Serve With Air Fryer Apple Cobbler

The cobbler is already a complete dessert on its own, but I love serving it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that melts into the warm apples. Caramel ice cream works beautifully too, adding even more richness to every bite. If you want that classic sweet-and-savory contrast, add a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on the side. It’s traditional and deepens all those fall flavors.

Freshly whipped cream or warm caramel sauce are perfect toppings if you want something a little lighter. For brunch or cozy afternoons, pair it with strong coffee or spiced chai. The cinnamon and nutmeg in the cobbler echo those warm spices in the chai, making everything feel extra comforting.
